Five tulips pot candle holder from Nemesradnót (Balogvölgy)

Other - other

The Nemesradnót candle holder was made by potter Márton Krisztiján for György Varga. It dates from the 18th century (Nemesradnót, v. Gömör m.), and is kept in the Ethnographic Museum in Budapest, having been brought there in 1931. ; ; Two forms of the earthenware vessel are known: the cuboid made of sheets, each side of which is straight, and the discoid, the lower part of which is convex, but the sides are rectangular on top. Both forms have a small base, two handles and sometimes the mouth is decorated with buttons on the corners. It is usually unglazed, possibly glazed on the inside. It also usually has a year and an inscription. Its decoration is → finger-impression rim, → scratched decoration, → writing or → convex carving. The discoid form is made by a → jug-shaped, and the one made of sheets → by a master potter. – Literature: Igaz Mária – Kresz Mária: The terminology of folk pottery (Népr. Ért., 1965). ; ; A pottery object, which is unglazed except for the mouth. A piece made of pale-fired clay assembled from sheets. On both sides there is a similar symmetrical flower stem painted with red and dark brown earthen paint: a five-tulip, stem-stretching flower bush, bent on both sides, growing from a spiral. The large tulips are uncontoured, painted with a brush, the tops of the tulip petals are in line. The dark brown elements are scribbled, and the accompanying element is the dot rosette. The inscription on one side is "Martony Krisztijan", on the other side "Gyorgy Várga". One was certainly the maker, the other the owner. ; ; The Lidike Holiday Home rethought the vessel and had it made by ceramic artist Danka Bakšová in Fazekassaluzsány based on photographs in 2018.
