* Bratislava, September 24, 1816 – † Vienna, June 23, 1880 / physician, dentist, ; university private teacher ; ; He completed his elementary school in Bratislava, Szakolca (in order to learn the Slovak language) and Komárom. Here he lived with Mór Jókai's parents. He completed his secondary school studies in Bratislava, after which he was a student at the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Pest for three years. In 1837 he went to Vienna, where he completed his university studies in 1840. Between 1840 and 1847 he worked as an assistant physician in the imperial city, and in 1848 he was appointed chief physician of the Lipótváros prison. From 1856 he practiced again in Vienna as the chief physician of the imperial and royal public hospital. He also excelled as a dentist, and was qualified as a private university teacher in this field at the University of Vienna. He was among the first to use ether anesthesia in dentistry in Europe. He introduced the cross-marking of the dental scheme. He wrote a study on the wear of the contact surface of teeth. He published numerous papers in German and Hungarian-language journals. Of his two sons, the elder Zsigmondy Emil (Vienna, August 11, 1861 – August 6, 1885) was a doctor and famous mountaineer who lost his life in the Alps.
