* Szentgyörgy, May 31, 1860 – † Vienna, May 8, 1938 / botanist, corresponding member of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences (1920) ; ; He began his school studies in his hometown, then graduated in Nagyszombat. He studied natural history and botany at the University of Vienna, and earned a doctorate in humanities in 1883. He was an intern in the Botany Department of the Vienna Court Museum of Natural History from 1884, assistant keeper from 1887–1899, keeper from 1899–1912, head from 1912–1918, and director of the museum from 1918 to 1922. Initially, he dealt with exotic (South American) plants, later primarily with lichens. He discovered many new species, several of which were named after him. Between 1894 and 1916 he edited and largely wrote the Kryptogamae exsiccatae herbarium I-XXIV. series, which is one of the classic works of international botanical literature. He also edited the publication Catalogus lichenum universalis, published between 1922 and 1940, dealing with lichens. In 1905 he was secretary-general of the Vienna Botanical Congress. On 5 May 1920, the Hungarian Academy of Sciences elected him a corresponding member.
