* Bratislava, June 14, 1747 – † Graz, November 22, 1826 / engineer, technical officer ; ; Brother of astronomer Ferenc Xavér Zach. He studied at the Vienna Engineering Academy, first as a lieutenant in the quartermaster's corps, in 1783 as a major, in 1799 as chief of staff of the Italian army, and in 1805 as a quartermaster. He had a thorough knowledge of surveying and natural sciences. During the siege of Belgrade in 1789, he so skillfully directed the artillery that the besieged Turkish defenders surrendered after two hours. Later (in 1802) he was given the title of Hungarian baron, which extended to the entire family.
