John Zabori

* Kátló, November 6, 1831 – † Esztergom, December 30, 1887 / doctor of theology, church writer, travel writer ; ; Originally called Draxler, his father, Antal Draxler, was the forester of Count Erdődy's estate. His son Hungarianized his name to Zádori in 1864. He completed his school studies in Léva, Érsekújvár, Esztergom and Nagyszombat, then completed his theology at the University of Vienna. He was ordained a priest in December 1854. Between 1854 and 1864, he was an assistant pastor in Balassagyarmat, and then from 1864 until his death, he was a teacher at the Esztergom seminary. In 1867, he visited Italy and France, and then Spain on government commission. His report on the Spanish trip contains valuable cultural, religious and art history data. He published the first detailed, authentic and historical description of bullfighting in Hungarian. In 1872, he visited Egypt and in his report on his trip, he deals in depth with the ancient Egyptian religion, hieroglyphs and Egyptian prehistory. In 1884, he became a teaching canon. He primarily wrote and translated articles and books on religious fervor. He also published a few books on church history (The Roman Catacombs, 1868, The Life of Pope Pius XI, 1869, The History of Margaret Island, ed.).
