* Bratislava, January 28, 1725 – † Bratislava, March 30, 1793 / historian, geographical writer, newspaper editor ; ; son of János Teofil Windisch, a doctor of medicine. Being a native German speaker, he studied Hungarian in Győr at the age of 11, then Slovak in Trenčín. After study trips abroad, he was a city official in his hometown, city councilor from 1768, city captain from 1780, and then mayor. In addition to his historical and geographical works, the most significant thing in his work is that he introduced the typical magazine types of the Enlightenment to Hungary. From 1767 to 1769 he edited Der Freund der Tugend, from 1771 to 1773 Pressburgisches Wochenblatt zur Ausbreitung der Künste und Wissenschaften, from 1781 to 1783 Ungarisches Magazin, and in 1791–1792 he edited a paper called Neues Ungarisches Magazin. In 1764 he participated in the founding of the Pressburger Zeitung and was its editor until 1773. In recognition of his scientific work, he was elected an honorary member of the Augsburg, Olomouc and Altdorf scientific societies.
