George Vukovich

* Košice, 1 June 1929 – † Dunabogdány, 22 September 2007 / statistician, demographer, sociologist, university professor, president of the Central Statistical Office between 1990 and 1995 ; ; graduated from the Premontre Gymnasium in Gödöllő in 1948. He graduated from the Faculty of Political Science and Law of the Eötvös Loránd University in Budapest in 1952. From 1950 to 1956 he was a statistician and then a leading statistician at the Hungarian Optical Works. From 1956 he worked as a senior lecturer at the Central Statistical Office. In 1962–1963 he worked as a senior scientific associate at the Population Research Group. Between 1963 and September 1966, he was an expert at the North African Demographic Center based in Cairo. After returning home, he became deputy director of the Population Research Group. From June 1968 to 1972, he participated in the demographic work of the Department of Social Affairs of the United Nations Office in Geneva. He then became head of the Environmental Statistics Department of the Central Statistical Office. Between 1974 and 1980, he was deputy head of the department of the office, and from 1980 to 1990, head of the department. In June 1990, he was appointed president of the Central Statistical Office. He held this position until May 1995. In 1977, he was awarded the title of honorary associate professor, and in the same year he obtained his candidate's degree. As a demographer, he dealt with marriage, fertility and population policy problems, and with the methodology of population forecasting and calculating the population optimum. The focus of his social statistical work was on the examination of social stratification and alcoholism. He was among the first in Hungary to conduct environmental statistical research. From 1996 he taught at the University of Miskolc. From 1958 he participated in the editing of Demográfia, from May 1977 to December 1988 the journal Grafikon of the Central Statistical Office, and from 1990 to 1998 the Statistical Review. He was the editor and permanent author of the publication series Társadalmi riport. Lánya Gabriella Vukovich (1954-) is a statistician and demographer.
