After his father returned from Russian captivity in 1947, he voluntarily moved to Hungary with his wife and five children to avoid the expected deportations. László Árpád Vaskovics completed his elementary school studies in Győr, then graduated from the construction technical school there with excellent results. He applied to several universities as a law student, but due to his origin (his father was a self-employed carpenter!) his application was rejected. In October 1956 he actively participated in the revolution, so after its suppression he defected to Austria in early 1957. He had to graduate there again because his Hungarian certificate was not accepted. He began his studies at the University of Vienna in 1958, where he studied sociology, philosophy and ethnology. He received a diploma in sociology in 1961. Between 1962 and 1966, he was a research associate at the Research Institute for the Sociology of Religion, then taught at various universities in Austria and Germany (Vienna, Linz, Trier), from 1977 he was a professor at the University of Bamberg, and from 1994 to 2003 he was the director of the State Institute for Family Research. He is a member of the boards of several companies, and in 1991 he became an honorary doctor of the Corvinus University of Budapest. Since 1998 he has been a member of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences. Since 2002 he has been a lecturer at the doctoral school of Sociology at the Corvinus University of Budapest.
