John Vargha

* Ekel, 1798 – † Buda, after 1850 / engineer ; ; He studied at the Institutum Geometricum in Pest and was ordained as an engineer in 1823. He was assigned to survey the rivers of the Great Plain, and in 1829 he made an inspection along the Tisza, the Körösök and the Maros. Later he became the deputy head of the Oradea Chamber Engineering Office and from 1831 he directed the regulation of the Körösök, and from 1837 also the construction of the Bega Canal. In 1844–1847 he dealt with the regulation of the Danube, and then was sent on a study trip to Western Europe for several months. On behalf of István Széchenyi, he prepared a list of the river regulation works carried out in Hungary up to that time. In 1848 he became the chief engineer-director of the navigation and river regulation department of the Ministry of Public Works. His fate after 1849 is unknown. His works remained in manuscript.
