Tomka-Szaszky Janos

* Folkusfalva, 1700 or 1694. September 7. – † Bratislava, 1762. August 26. / Lutheran pastor, geography teacher, historian ; ; He completed his theological studies in Jena. He was first a pastor in Győr, then from 1732 until his death he worked in Bratislava. He taught at the Lutheran Lyceum in Bratislava, where Mátyás Bél had previously worked, so they knew each other well personally. Among other things, Tomka-Szászky also taught the history of Hungary, which was still unusual at that time. He also organized a Hungarian self-education circle for students. Between 1747 and 1760 he held the position of rector of the Lyceum. Following Anonymous, he prepared the first Hungarian historical atlas in 1750–1751 (Introductio in geographiam Hungariae antiqui et medii aevi – this was only published after his death, in 1781). His maps show the migration of the Hungarian people, the Carpathian Basin in the Roman era and during the migration period, the Avar state, “Great Moravia”, the settlement of the conquering Hungarians, the territories of the medieval Kingdom of Hungary and the author’s contemporary territories.
