Lajos Thallóczy (Strommer)

* Košice, December 8, 1854 – † Herceghalom, December 1, 1916 / historian, archivist, politician, member of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences ; ; He graduated from the Catholic Gymnasium in Buda, where he also founded a stenography club and won a competition in stenography. In 1875, he was appointed Doctor of Humanities as a teacher of history and Latin at the University of Budapest. Later, he also studied law for a few semesters. He worked as a draftsman for the National Archives for a few years, while also being the assistant editor of the Centuries and the Archeologia Értesítő. From 1884, he was the director of the Vienna archives of the joint Austro-Hungarian Ministry of Finance and at the same time taught Hungarian public law and history at the Theresianum and the Consular Academy in Vienna. In 1915, he was the governor of Serbia, which was occupied by the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy. He died in a train accident63 when he was travelling to Budapest from the funeral of Franz Joseph I. As a historian, he primarily dealt with the past of the Balkan countries, the processing and publication of their archives, and the history of old Hungarian diplomacy. He is considered the founder of Hungarian Albanology. He was a prolific author, writing articles and studies on a wide range of topics, and several journalistic books and fictional historical biographies were published under a pseudonym. He edited and published the archives of several families. The Hungarian Academy of Sciences elected him a corresponding member in 1883 and a full member in 1895. He was the president of the Hungarian Historical Society in 1913–1916. He played a significant role in bringing home the ashes of Imre Thököly, Ferenc II. Rákóczi and their fellow exiles.
