He obtained an engineering degree from the Faculty of Chemical Engineering of the Budapest University of Technology in 1925. Sigmond Elek (1873–1939) became an assistant professor of chemical engineer and agrogeology at the Technical University, where he initially worked on soil biology. In the late 1920s, he worked in England for a long time, where he also became acquainted with modern methods of mathematical statistics and experimental design. In 1935, his interest turned towards food chemistry, and as a researcher and a ministerial official, the management and development of food industry technology became the main subject of his activities. In 1950, he was appointed professor at the Department of Food Chemistry of the Faculty of Chemical Engineering of the Budapest University of Technology. He educated generations of engineers. His papers on theoretical and practical issues of food quality still express current ideas today. He is also credited with developing innovative food analytical procedures. His attention also extended to food packaging technology.
