Dániel Szontagh Zászkal6, January 3, 1809 – † Nagyszombat, April 4, 1867. He was the son of a royal councilor, historian, genealogist, and flora researcher. He completed his medical studies in Vienna (1868). Having settled in Pest, he primarily dealt with botany as the editor of the journal "Télészetségtudományi Közlöny". In 1873, he became the head of the "water health institute" in Újtátrafüred and, seeing the rudimentary conditions, he started building a new medical sanatorium on a rented area of 20 acres and founded Újtátrafüred. In 1883, he established a new sanatorium, which was the first high-altitude health resort in Hungary that was also open in winter. Here, the alpine climate, hydrotherapy and electrotherapy were used in combination to treat patients. His son, Miklós Szontagh Jr. (Újtátrafüred) also chose a medical career and continued his father's work. Szontagh was a passionate hiker, mountaineer and skier, and was one of the initiators of the establishment of the Hungarian Carpathian Society.
