St. Imre Church in Alsócitár
Building, structure
The classicist St. Imre Church was built on older foundations in 1785 by Kristóf Migazzi, the Viennese Archbishop and Cardinal, the village's landlord at the time. (Based on historical village seals, the patron saint of the original church may have been St. John the Evangelist.) It has a single nave, its sanctuary has a straight closure, and its sacristy was built later. It has a Prussian vault, with a brick choir. Its also classicist main altar dates from the 18th century, and the painting above it depicts the Assumption of the Virgin Mary. Its classicist benches were also made at the end of the 18th century, and the old bell of the church was cast in 1800. A stone tablet in Latin above the main entrance commemorates the construction and the supporters. A valuable old linden tree stands in front of the church.
