Szeder Fabian Janos

* Csáb, June 24, 1784 – † Komáromfüss, December 13, 1859 / Benedictine priest and teacher, linguist, ethnographic collector ; ; He began his school studies in his native village, then continued in Komárom. In 1797–1799 he studied oratory and poetry in Esztergom, and in 1800–1802 he studied philosophy at the academy in Bratislava. In 1803 he entered the Order of St. Benedict and completed his theology studies in Pannonhalma and Győr. After his ordination as a priest, he was a high school teacher in Esztergom from 1808, taught in Győr from 1811, and then became the school's director. He also taught in Sopron and Dömölk. From 1817 he was again a teacher in Győr, then in Nagyszombat from 1819 to 1824, in Komárom from 1824 to 1826, in Esztergom from 1826 to 1830, and in Pannonhalma from 1830 to 1832 he was a teacher of education, aesthetics, and diplomas. The Hungarian Academy of Sciences elected him a corresponding member in 1831, but he resigned from his academic membership in 1837. From 1832 he was an archivist in Pannonhalma, then a librarian, and from 1841 until his death he was the governor of the estates of the Benedictine order in Komáromfüss. As a writer, he excelled in many genres. His articles, stories, comedies, and poems were published in contemporary magazines, but he also edited and published the Uránia national almanac in Esztergom between 1828 and 1833. ; A Hungarian-German dictionary, the Magyar grammatika and another linguistic work remained in manuscript in the Pannonhalma library. His best-known work is the "folklore essay" entitled A palóczokról, which he wrote at the urging of the literary figure István Horvát (1784–1846) and submitted to the Tudományos Gyűjtemény competition. His life and work have recently been primarily studied by Károly (Kelenye) Csáky. On his initiative, a bilingual memorial plaque was placed on the wall of the Csáb church in 1984, and Szeder Fábián Memorial Days are held annually. There is also a memorial plaque on his former residential building in Komáromfüssi.
