He studied natural history at the Faculty of Humanities of the University of Budapest. From 1913 he was an assistant professor at the Department of Botany under Sándor Mágócsy-Dietz, and in 1916 he received his doctorate with his thesis Data for the Lichen Flora of Ung County. He worked at the Seed Testing Institute from 1914 to 1919. He was dismissed from his job in 1921 due to his role during the Soviet Republic. He worked for various commercial companies and only returned to the institute in 1927. In 1945 he became the director of the institute. From 1952 until his death, he worked in the MNM's botanical collection and also lectured at the university. He spent a significant part of his life in the service of seed testing, for which he was an internationally recognized authority. In addition to seed testing, he did important work in the field of processing the lichen flora of Hungary and the Balkans. He participated at his own expense with Sándor Jávorka (Hegybánya) in the botanical expeditions of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences to Herzegovina in 1918, Bulgaria in 1929 and Greece in 1932. He made the botanical collecting and study trips to Bulgaria in 1954 and Albania in 1956 on behalf of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences. He described about a hundred new lichen species.
