The Kingdom of Hungary participated in World War I on the side of the Central Powers and as part of the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy, not as an independent power in its foreign affairs. Its war goal was to preserve the country's territorial integrity, which was threatened by the Russian Empire's expansionist Pan-Slavic policy, which also included the Kingdom of Serbia in its efforts. ; During the four-year war, a total of 9 million soldiers were mobilized from the territory of the Monarchy, including 3.4 million from Hungary and Croatia. Of the 3.4 million people, 530 thousand fell on the battlefield, 1.4 million were wounded and more than 830 thousand were taken prisoner. ; The photo shows István Szabó, a soldier who died a heroic death in World War I (1914–1918). His name is engraved in marble on the memorial plaque at the Heroes' Monument in Vága.
