Paul Stefanovits

* Košice, November 24, 1920 / chemical engineer, university professor, member of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences ; ; He graduated from high school in his hometown in 1938, then obtained a chemical engineering degree from the Faculty of Engineering and Architecture of the József Nádor University of Technology and Economics in Budapest in 1942. He worked at the Geological Institute between 1942 and 1949, and at the Institute of Soil Science and Agrochemistry of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences between 1949 and 1965. He worked as a head professor of the Department of Soil Science at the Gödöllő University of Agricultural Sciences (now: Szent István University) between 1965 and 1990. The Hungarian Academy of Sciences elected him a corresponding member in 1970 and a full member in 1976. His main research areas are soil mapping, the investigation of soil formation processes and agricultural environmental protection. With his group, he prepared the soil map of Hungary, as well as the soil destruction and clay mineral maps. He further developed the soil classification system. With his colleagues, he developed the method for calculating the soil and site value on the basis of soil genetics.
