Jeno Serényi

* Igló, September 5, 1884 – † Doberdo, July 15, 1915 / lawyer, mountaineer, sports historian ; ; He graduated from the Piarist Gymnasium in Budapest in 1902, then with a third party (in the company of Lajos K. Horn and Jenő Madaras) he traveled the Carpathian ridge from Orsova to Máramarossziget. They traveled about 1000 km on foot, by cart and sometimes by train. From 1904, the Tatra Mountains became his destination. Between 1906 and 1915, he was considered one of the best mountaineers. He earned a law degree from the University of Budapest in 1906. ; Already during his student days, he hiked in the High Tatras and later in the Alps. He participated in several first winter ascents. From 1908 he edited the Snow section of the National Sport, but also wrote many articles, including sports history papers, for other Hungarian specialist magazines. He was one of the founders of the magazine Turistaság és Alpinizmus. In 1912 he edited the volume A sísport příkladíky készékő. He was a main contributor to the guide for rock climbers around Budapest. He was one of the founders of the Hungarian Ski Club and the Hungarian Ski Association. He volunteered for the war and died a hero's death as a reserve lieutenant. His remains were only transported to Budapest in 1929 and buried in the Farkasrét cemetery. A mountain peak in the High Tatras bears his name (Serényi Tower).
