After that, he studied art and philosophy in Nagyszombat, then theology at the University of Pest and obtained a doctorate in 1813. He was ordained a priest on November 5, 1809. Between 1810 and 1827, he was a canon in Rozsnyó and director of the priestly training institute. From 1827, he was bishop of Rozsnyó, from November 1838, of Pécs. From July 21, 1849, archbishop of Esztergom, from 1853, cardinal. At the same time, he also became a member of the board of directors of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences. He was an opponent of religiously mixed marriages, and was attacked for this. During the Bach era, he had several initiatives that were disapproved of by the Viennese court. In 1861, he rejected the imperial court's decree demanding a new tax. He operated the Pécs teacher training college from his own financial resources, paid the teachers, and founded church schools in every major settlement in the diocese there. He also initiated the repatriation of the Pauline order, but his death prevented him from carrying it out. He published several church works in Latin and Hungarian.
