Aladar Scherffel

* Igló, February 18, 1865 – † Tihany, June 1, 1939 / microbiologist, algologist, botanist ; ; Son of pharmacist and algologist Vilmos Aurél Scherffel (Felka). He studied at the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Budapest from 1883 to 1885, obtaining his doctorate in 1888, while he was also a student at the University of Graz for two years (1886–1887). In 1889–1890 he worked as an assistant at the Institute of Botany of the University of Innsbruck. Between 1890 and 1919 he lived in Igló and was engaged in botanical and algological research. Following in his father's footsteps, he primarily studied the fungal and algal flora of the Spiš region, but he also dealt with the reproduction of microscopic organisms. He occasionally made shorter and longer study trips abroad (he conducted research in Budapest, Vienna and Berlin between 1890 and 1898), and in 1899 he visited the island of Heligoland. In 1919 he settled in Gödöllő. In 1928 he was appointed librarian of the Hungarian Biological Research Institute of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences, which was then established in Tihany. He held this position until his death. Between 1932 and 1939 he was a titular public extraordinary professor at the Ferenc József University of Szeged.
