* Liptószentmiklós, August 17, 1918 – † Budapest, December 5, 1974 / art historian, ; museologist ; ; He studied art history at the University of Budapest. From 1941 he was an employee of the Museum of Fine Arts, from 1952 he was the head of the Old Hungarian Collection. From 1970 he was the director general of the Museum of Applied Arts. At first he was interested in the art of the more recent past and today, and wrote his doctoral dissertation on Viktor Madarász. During the forties he wrote numerous exhibition reviews for art journals and newspapers. From the end of the forties he was primarily concerned with issues of medieval Hungarian art. He compiled the old Hungarian material for the presentations in Neuchâtel (1965), Paris (1966), London (1967), Budapest (1969, on the occasion of the International Congress of Art History), Moscow (1971) and Rome (1972). As the head of the Museum of Applied Arts, he modernized the collection, supplemented it with works of contemporary art and expanded the museum's international relations. He also extended his research to materials that had been barely used in art historical research until then, the most significant of which are the articles on heraldic letters. His most important works are his books on the frescoes, panel paintings and wooden sculptures of medieval Hungary. A special value of these books is the catalogue section, which lists the works, briefly describes them (including those that are lost and known only from the literature), and also provides a bibliography listing all their important references. With his work, he significantly contributed to the development of research in the field of panel painting and wood sculpture. His Budapest residence is marked with a memorial plaque. ; ; His main works: ; Wall paintings of medieval Hungary, 1954, ; Panel paintings of medieval Hungary, 1955, ; Gothic paintings in Hungary (in German, French and English), 1963, ; Wood sculptures of medieval Hungary, 1967, ; French and Dutch miniatures in Hungary (with Zoltánné Soltész, Tibor Szántó), 1969, Wall paintings of medieval Hungary (also in German), 1977, ; Wall paintings in medieval Hungary (also in German), 1977.
