* Vicsápapáti, September 17, 1911 – † Budapest, February 3, 1989 / physician, ophthalmologist, university professor, member of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences (1976) ; ; He completed his studies at the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Pécs, where he graduated in 1935. He studied ophthalmology at the Medical University of Vienna. From 1935 to 1939, he was an intern at the Eye Clinic of Pécs, then an assistant professor. From 1939, he was the chief physician of the Budapest State Eye Hospital, and in 1946, a private professor of ophthalmic pathology. In 1950, he was a professor at the Eye Clinic of Szeged, and from 1952, at the 1st Eye Clinic of Budapest. He was the Secretary General of the Hungarian Ophthalmological Society, and from 1970, its president. He was elected a member of the New York Academy of Sciences and the Leopoldina Academy of Natural Sciences. He was a member of the International and European Ophthalmological Councils, and served as president of the latter from 1972 to 1976. He was elected to the leadership of several Hungarian and foreign medical societies, and honored them with corresponding and honorary memberships. He was the editor-in-chief of the journal Szemszet and a member of the editorial boards of several foreign journals. He was the founding editor-in-chief of the series New Results in Ophthalmology. His areas of interest are the relationships between light, the eye and the neuroendocrine system, diseases of the lacrimal organs, but especially his pioneering work in the fields of ophthalmological pathology, histology and ultrastructure. He has published more than 300 papers and 9 books on these topics. He was the leader of the fight against trachoma in Hungary. He received the Distinguished Doctor Award, the Markhot, Semmelweis, Schulek, Helmholtz, Chabret, Vannas Memorial Medals, and the Braille Medal. The Hungarian Academy of Sciences elected him a corresponding member in 1961 and a full member in 1976. Many of his works have been translated into German, Russian, and English.
