László Gál Kamocsai: "A woman will become a girl..." ; ; Browsing through yellowed photographs, I have long been interested in putting down on paper how the choice of a partner and marriage took place in the Calvinist and Hungarian-speaking Kamocsa of the Upper Highlands. ; Since I was raised by my grandmother, Gyuláné Szabó Gizella Lukács (1923-2008), she was my most detailed informant, she told me a lot about the customs of choosing a partner and weddings. ; I would like to write this down now so that it will be preserved for the next generation. ; To understand all this, we have to turn back the wheel of time to the 1900s, when schooling became compulsory at the age of 6, and since they still attended 6 classes at that time, adolescents were confirmed at the age of 12, which was later postponed to 14, and today to 15. ; Children were trained to work around the house early on, and in most cases, the stronger boys helped at the age of 10-12 with the cultivation of the land, sowing, harvesting, preparing feed for the animals, and "chopping". The girls, on the other hand, learned to work around the house and cook almost through play; it was their job to feed, graze, and keep the small birds in order. The women who stayed home also sent out lunch to the workers in the fields. ; ; ; ; With respect for my native village. László Gál of Kamocsai, Kamocsán, June 2015
