Tivadar Posewitz

* Igló, December 2, 1851 – † Budapest, June 12, 1917 / geologist, doctor ; ; He obtained a medical degree from the University of Budapest in 1874. He then studied geology for 3 years at the Freiberg Mining Academy. In 1879, he traveled to the Dutch East Indies (Indonesia) as a military doctor, but in his free time he primarily conducted geological research on the island of Borneo. Years later, in 1889, he published a book about this in Berlin. He returned to his homeland in 1884 and mapped the High Tatras region for a few years. In 1887, he became an assistant geologist at the Royal Hungarian Geological Institute, from 1897 its department geologist, and in 1908 its chief geologist. He carried out important geological surveys in the Tertiary Iglói Basin and in the sandstone area of the Máramaros region. He researched both the Hungarian and Polish sides of the Tatra Mountains, prepared statistical surveys on the number of visitors to the High Tatra Mountains, observed chamois, collected legends and tales of the region, and compiled and examined the geographical names of the Tatra Mountains.
