Elemér Pongracz

* Felsőtúr, November 8, 1862 – † Budapest, February 18, 1944 / writer, museum director, local historian ; ; His father was General István Pongrácz, his uncle was Lieutenant Lajos Pongrácz. He completed his secondary school studies in Nagyszombat and Váco. Between 1881 and 1885 he studied law at the University of Budapest, but did not finish his studies. For a while he worked as a journalist for various newspapers (Hasznos Mulattató, Ümtökös, Új Budapest). In 1886 he returned to his native county and started the Honti Hírlap, founded the Hontvármegyei Irodalom- és Művezsépártoló Egylet. Later, from 1893, he was the cashier of the Hungarian Parliament's House of Representatives. In 1898, with the support of historian Mihály Matunák, he organized a highly acclaimed exhibition in the county hall of Ipolyság, and published a catalogue (The Catalogue of the Historical Exhibition of Hontvármegye) which presented the more than a thousand exhibited objects by room. It was then that the idea of establishing a museum in Ipolyság was conceived. It was opened in 1902, and its first director was Elemér Pongrácz. From 1900, he edited and published the Honti Calendar annually. He prepared the chapter entitled Literature, Science, Art for Samu Borovszky's Hont County monograph.
