Ruins of the Benedictine branch monastery of Pográny

We have very little information about the monastery of Pográny, which ceased to exist in the Middle Ages. It belonged to the Garamszentbenedek abbey and, according to the Monasteriologia Regni Hungariae, was dedicated to the Blessed Virgin Mary. According to the Millennium County Monograph and other smaller sources, a school may have operated alongside it. E. Gerendás places the foundation of the monastery in the 11th century. According to Tivadar Ortvay, the monastery here was not yet independent in the 13th century, but according to Otmár Gergelyi, it may have been independent a century later. The Hungarian Zion also dealt with the institution in 1865. Ágost Balogh draws attention to the fact that some sources accidentally classified it as part of the diocese of Veszprém and also points to the surviving title of abbot of Pográny. The last person known to us to bear the title of abbot of Pográny was the canon of Eger in 1930 (“abbas de Pográn”). Ágost Balogh visited the church garden and found the supposed foundations of the monastery. Since then, these have been greatly damaged, but traces of them can still be observed in some places (they were partially covered with earth brought in as part of landscaping a few years ago). Archaeological excavations have never taken place. Sketches of old floor plans can be found in the archives of the local parish, first published by Sándor Fehér in 1995. The street named Apáti next to the church garden may also refer to the monastery, but we prefer to connect it to the estate of the Garamszentbenedek monastery (elsewhere we also propose the traditional village structure of the village to be included in the local repository). The oral tradition of the Benedictine monastery still lives in the village today.
