The historical village structure of Pográny

Not only in Zoboralján, but also elsewhere, it is rare to find a village whose inner parts have been owned by different landlords since the Middle Ages. Pográny is just like that. One of the reasons for this may have been that Pográny was more prosperous than the other villages and everyone tried to acquire it from their possessions. The individual parts of the village usually corresponded to a street and their names have preserved the name of the old owner to this day. Apátyi below the churchyard was the property of the old Benedictine abbey (presumably related to Garamszentbenedek, but there was also a branch monastery here), Érseki parallel to the Kadany stream and was owned by the Esztergom archdiocese, Püspök-szer below the bank belonged to the bishop of Nyitra, and nearby was a dead-end square, Potom-szög, owned by the chapter. The Forgách estates have no surviving names, but on the border, under the Poronna vineyard hill, the “Lefántyi pallag” associated with Elefánthya can be identified. This village structure in the interior of the municipality is both a material value (real spatial structure) and an intellectual legacy (the preserved imprint of a historical phenomenon and an intellectual and linguistic heritage).
