He was the first in Hungary to deal with daguerreotypes and photography. Above all, however, he was interested in the issues of glass production. As a chemist at the Zlatnó glass factory, he is credited with several significant inventions and discoveries. His invention was hyaloplasty, which was used to make glass coins. He received a gold medal for it at the 1855 Paris World Exhibition. His most significant invention was iridescent glass, which made the Zlatnó glass factory internationally known. Joseph Lobmeyr acquired the secret of creating a glass surface resplendent in rainbow colors from an employee of the Austrian manufacturer Pantocsek, and thanks to this, he laid the foundations for a company that is still thriving today.
