John Olvedi

* Érsekújvár, July 20, 1914 – † Munich, April 22, 1983 / historian, journalist ; ; He graduated from high school in his hometown, studied law and political science in Bratislava and Budapest. From 1935 he was a contributor to Gyula Szekfű’s newspaper, the Magyar Szemlé, and despite his young age he wrote very thorough analyses of the situation of the Hungarians in Slovakia. In 1939, together with István Csatár, he compiled a balance sheet of the Hungarian minority in Czechoslovakia between 1918 and 1938 in the publication A vétért Felvidék adáttára I-II. He worked as a journalist during World War II, then left for Austria in the spring of 1945. From 1951 he was a contributor to Radio Free Europe. He worked in the New York editorial office until March 1952, and then in the Munich editorial office until his retirement (1979).
