The craftsmanship of Gergely Németh

Other - other

Gergely Németh is a retired railwayman living in Légen, who practices an interesting and unusual craft in his free time. He enjoyed doing handwork even as a child and was attracted to such activities. When he was still a little boy, he learned to weave wheat ears from his uncle. It was not easy for him at first, but he kept trying, and soon he mastered all the little tricks of weaving. Unripe ears of wheat must always be used for weaving. Often thirty or more ears of wheat are needed to make such an ornament. Uncle Gergely does not sell these ornaments, but rather gives them to his acquaintances, friends and relatives as gifts, one at a time. On one occasion, an exhibition was held of the ornaments he made. In a beautiful collection, photos of his work were published, along with several other well-known craftsmen. He also made wreaths from these ears of wheat for the Légen cooperative in the old days. Since then, such a wreath has been displayed on the altar of the local church every year before the harvest. This is not the only craft activity that Uncle Gergely is involved in. In his free time, he also makes beautiful necklaces at home. For the necklaces, he collects ripe wild walnuts, which he cuts into 1-2 cm slices with a saw. These slices contain natural patterns.
