Matthias tree of Nagymegyer

There is a historical myth connected to the several hundred-year-old tree standing on the edge of the Nagymegyer forest. According to it, in the 15th century, the king personally came to Nagymegyer to investigate the complaints of the Nagymegyer residents regarding tax payments. He pitched his tent near this tree. Here he received the judge Ozsváld Zsámbók from Megyer and István Végh from Izsap and their delegation. He promised to investigate their complaints, and as a result, on December 15, 1466, in Nagyszombat, he granted the settlement of Nagymegyer the privilege of a market town. The tree seen in the photo is one of the prominent symbols of Nagymegyer, which is also expressed in the city's coat of arms.
