Martin Nagy

* Muzsla, October 6, 1804 – † Szentgyörgy, April 5, 1873 / doctor of philosophy, Piarist; monk, teacher, corresponding member of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences (1844); ; He completed high school in Esztergom, philosophy in Győr and Eger. In 1824 he became a member of the Piarist order. In 1828–1829 he studied theology in Nyitra and Szentgyörgy and was ordained a priest in September 1829. In 1830–1831 he was a teacher in Kalocsa, in 1832–1834 in Szeged, and in 1835–1836 in Pest. In 1836–1840 he was an educator and a teacher of Hungarian language and literature in the Theresianum in Vienna. In 1842–1844 he was again a high school teacher in Pest, and in 1845–1847 he was the principal of the high school in Tatán. Between 1848–1856 he was the deputy principal of the high school in Szeged, and its principal in 1856–1858. Between 1858–1870 he was the head of the Piarist monastery in Pest. This activity of his is generally judged critically: he is accused of having “squandered” the monastery’s real estate. His four-volume encyclopedia is the first significant work of youth education in Hungarian.
