* Tornalja, January 24, 1949 – / ecologist, university professor, politician ; ; He completed his primary and secondary education in his hometown, graduating from the Hungarian gymnasium in 1968. He graduated from the Comenius University in Bratislava with a degree in natural and regional geography (1973), received his doctoral degree in Bratislava in 1975, his candidate of geographical sciences degree in Brno, and his doctorate in environmental sciences degree in Bratislava in 1994. In 1973–1990, he was a scientific associate at the Institute of Experimental Biology and Ecology of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences. In 1989, he was one of the founders of the Third Millennium Direction ecological party. In 1990–1992, he was Deputy Minister of Environmental Protection. In 1992–1994, he was the head of the department of the Regional Ecology Institute of the SZTA, and from 1995, he was the head of the Department of Regional Ecological Syntheses. From 1993, he was an associate professor at the Faculty of Ecology and Environmental Protection of the Zvolen University of Technology, and from 1997, he was a professor. In 1994–1995, he was a visiting professor at Roskilde University in Denmark, and in 1995–1996, he was a visiting professor at the Technische Universität f. Bodenkultur in Vienna. From 1995, he was the head of the UNESCO Department of Environmental Protection in Bánya Selmec at the Zvolen University of Technology. In 1998–2006, he was the Minister of Environment, and in 2006–2010, he was a member of parliament for the MKP. His research interests include regional and landscape ecology, ecological planning of regions (LANDEP), ecopolitics, systems of ecological stability, regional connections of geosystems, systematization of priority processes and enforcement of environmental protection aspects. He is one of the developers of the LANDEP methodology, which was also recommended by the 1992 Rio de Janeiro Summit. He is a member or chairman of numerous Slovak and foreign scientific and advisory boards, and a speaker at domestic and foreign professional conferences. He is the author or co-author of more than 20 scientific papers and nearly 20 books.
