He completed his secondary school studies in Késmárk and Bratislava, and from 1805 he studied theology in Jena. He was ordained a priest in 1807 and began his pastoral ministry in Majerka, Szepes County. In 1811 he was called to Kislomnice and worked there until his death. He published numerous articles on historical, natural history, and ethnographic topics in contemporary newspapers, and he wrote with great interest about the Szepes region. He was a colleague of Vince Károly Kölesy (c. 1780–1851), who wrote National Plutarch or the Biographies of Notable Men of Hungary and the Provinces United with It. in his four-volume work he published biographies of 105 Hungarian historical figures. The first volume, published in 1815, was written by Kölesy himself, and Melczer also contributed to the next three volumes (the work was also published in German). In the work of János Csaplovics (Fehérkút) Topographisch-statistisches Archiv des Königreiches Ungarn (1821), he wrote the chapter on the Szepes County and the Tatra lakes.
