* Bazin, 15 April 1833 – † Paris, 15 October 1907 / astronomer, mathematician, photographer ; ; He began his studies in his hometown. He studied physics and astronomy at the University of Vienna. His scientific career also began here: he attracted attention primarily by calculating the orbits of comets and planets. In 1860, at the invitation of the French astronomer Le Verrier (1811–1877), he went to Paris, where he became an employee of the Longitude Office. In 1878, he became deputy director of the French National Observatory, and in 1896, its director. He primarily worked on photographing the sky, and also improved astronomical instruments and observation equipment. He created the so-called “elbow telescope” (coude refractor). He also worked on refraction, the determination of the aberration constant, and the determination of the telegraphic longitude difference of major European cities (Vienna, Berlin, Marseille, Algiers, etc.). With his colleague Pierre Henri Puiseux (1855–1928), he created a large map of the Moon based on about 6,000 lunar photographs. ; Asteroid number 12,897 and a lunar crater bear his name.
