Legany Ödön

* Košice, March 8, 1876 – † Hatvan, August 14, 1944 / plant breeder ; ; He graduated from the Academy of Economics in Magyaróvár in 1898. He was an assistant officer in the estate of Count Sándor Károlyi for two years. In 1900, he became an assistant professor at the Department of Plant Production of the Academy in Magyaróvár. In 1907, he studied plant production in Germany, France, Belgium and the Netherlands. From 1913 to 1918, he was a professor at the Academy in Magyaróvár. In 1918, he took over the management of the plant breeding colony in Nagytelk near Hatvan. He was the first in Hungary to produce a new plant variety through crossbreeding: the lens vetch (scientific name: Vicia Lens Legangiana). He worked on freezing wheat, bred cereals, fodder plants, hedges, kitchen garden plants, etc. He initiated the establishment of the Hungarian Plant Breeders' Association, and was its executive director and vice-president. In Magyaróvár, he was a member of the board of directors of the Mosonvár County Economic Association, and he actively contributed to the work of the Magyaróvár Széchenyi Circle and the Men's Chorus, which excelled in the dissemination of Hungarian culture. In Hatvan, he was a member of the management of the "Hatvan and its Region Economic Circle" and the chairman of the agricultural committee. He was the first overseer (presbyter) of the Hatvan Evangelical parish founded by the Evangelical priest Gábor Sztehlo (1909–1974), who saved Jewish children in 1944.
