Samuel Lanyi

* Igló, April 15, 1792 – † Kékkő, March 9, 1860 / hydraulic engineer, painter ; ; He obtained an engineering degree from the Institutum Geometricum engineering university in Pest in 1823. He immediately became involved in the survey of Hungarian rivers. Initially, he worked along the Sajó, and then from 1824 on the section of the Danube from Dévény to Pétervárad. From the 1830s, he led the survey of the Tisza and its tributaries. For a long time, it was believed that this work was carried out by Pál Vásárhelyi. Lányi was upset that he was not entrusted with the river regulation tasks after Vásárhelyi's death in 1846. He left the state service and became an engineer at the Balassa estate in Kékkő. In addition to his engineering work, he also engaged in fine arts as a hobby. He also made several artistic drawings for Antal Mocsáry's work titled Historiai, Geografiai és Statistikás esmertése (History, Geography and Statistics of the County of Nemes Nógrád), published in 1826. He belonged to the circle of friends of the painter Miklós Barabás Lányi (1810–1898). His self-portrait is preserved in the Hungarian National Gallery.
