Samuel Kamory

* 1830. February 6. Bakabánya, Hont County – † 1903. February 3. Bratislava / Evangelical high school teacher, orientalist and Bible translator. ; ; He studied in Selmeczbánya, graduated in theology in Bratislava, where he later worked as an assistant teacher for two years. During this time, he mainly dealt with the Greek and Latin languages. In 1853 he went abroad and increased his theological and linguistic knowledge in Halle and then in Göttingen. He listened to the most famous orientalists and, in addition to Hebrew, mastered the Arabic, Sanskrit, Assyrian and Turkish languages. Upon his return home, he was elected a high school and theological teacher in Bratislava, a position he held until 1885, when he retired. Individuals form families, these into peoples and nations, in order to jointly remedy common troubles and enjoy common advantages. Consequently, it is the inalienable duty of each individual who is a member of the family of these families to work towards the good and benefit of the nation and country in which he lives, to the extent and in the direction in which he feels called. Starting from this sense of duty, I have set about this great work, the enormity of which it is unnecessary to touch. If I did not know that man is weak, I would say: I did it! I have done it! Moreover, my soul will be reassured, even if I feel that "I wanted to!" My guide is not vanity, but manly seriousness and serious manliness. This is my reason. Anyone who can think will see that for every nation, Bible translation is the first and most important literary asset. The more excellent and powerful the nation, the more carefully it sees to it that it has a good Bible translation. This is what the young are educated on, this is what the old are built on, this is what the elderly seek solace in. ; ;
