Frederick Kulka

* Ipolyság, January 31, 1925 – † Budapest, September 23, 1989 / physician, pulmonologist, university professor ; ; He completed his medical studies at the University of Budapest between 1945 and 1950. Between 1950 and 1959 he was a staff member of the National Korányi TBC Sanatorium, and during this time he worked at the Hungarian Hospital in North Korea twice (1951–1953 and 1955–1956). Between 1959 and 1979 he was an associate professor at the Medical University of Szeged, from 1969 he was a professor, and later (in 1972–1978) he was its vice-rector. He defended his doctoral dissertation in 1972. From 1979 until his death, he was the head of the Department of Thoracic Surgery at the Budapest Medical University, and from 1986 he was the rector of the university. His area of expertise was thoracic surgery, research and treatment of lung diseases, and the investigation of the possibility of lung transplantation, on which he wrote several studies and books. His daughter, Janina Kulka (1957-) is a professor of pathology, and his son János Kulka (1958-) is a Kossuth Prize-winning actor.
