Ferenc Kukan

* Érsekújvár, October 6, 1898 – † Szeged, December 13, 1971 / ophthalmologist, university teacher ; ; He graduated from high school in his hometown in 1918. He was inaugurated as a doctor of medicine at the Budapest University of Science and Technology in 1924. Between 1924 and 1939, he worked at the Pécs Eye Clinic. In 1936, he was appointed a private university teacher. Between 1939 and 1950, he was an ophthalmologist at various rural hospitals. Between 1950 and 1969, he was a professor at the Szeged Eye Clinic and the dean of the medical school's faculty of general medicine. During his tenure as dean, the Szeged University of Science and the medical school were split into two, and the Faculty of Pharmacy was also established at that time. He developed new eye surgery procedures, and the instruments he developed (e.g. the Kukán-like ophthalmodynamometer) earned him international fame. He also paid attention to the aesthetic decoration of his workplace, and the walls of his study were decorated with the works of his tragically deceased brother (who committed suicide), Géza Kukán (Érsekújvár, May 1, 1890 – Budapest, January 28, 1934), a graphic artist and painter. His most important work: Ophthalmology (with Béla Boros and Aladár Kettesy), 1962.
