Between 1888 and 1891, Gyula Krúdy (Nyíregyháza, 21 October 1878 – Budapest, 12 May 1933), a writer and one of the greatest figures of 20th-century Hungarian fiction and literature, was a junior student at the Piarist grammar school in Podolin. He lived at 92 Fő tér in Podolin. From there, he often stopped over in Késmárk, which also left a recognizable mark in Sindbad. His experiences in Spiš had a lifelong impact on him, providing the starting point and motifs for a whole series of his stories and novels (e.g. the early Sindbad short stories, Ifjú éveke or the Podolini ghost, whose title character, Mr. Rimszky, was of course a real person), and also his work Boldogult úrfikoromban. Levoča story The Gold and the Woman one-act opera. ; since 1969, there has been a bilingual memorial plaque on the wall of his former school with the following (worn, barely visible) text: "Gyula Krúdy 1878–1933, a great admirer of Podolin and the Tatra landscapes, was a student in this building. Master of Hungarian fine prose."
