Korponay graduated from the Košice gymnasium and spent a year at the Košice Academy of Humanities, and in 1834 he himself joined the army. He studied at the military academy in Vienna and was a first lieutenant in 1842. During the Hungarian Revolution and War of Independence of 1848/49, he was first a military advisor to Prime Minister Lajos Batthyány, and then from September 1848 he served in the army with the rank of major. After the surrender of Világos, he was taken prisoner of war and was sentenced to death in the first instance, which was later commuted to 16 years of imprisonment. He was released from the Kufstein castle prison in 1856. He had been involved in military science since the 1840s, and he also wrote articles on military issues in numerous periodicals. In recognition of this, the Hungarian Academy of Sciences elected him a corresponding member in 1844. In 1861, he became the chief archivist of Abaúj County. During these years, he continued his professional writing activities and began his undertaking entitled Magyarország harcztörténete, which discussed the history of Hungarian military art from the very beginning. He presented the five-volume manuscript to the Hungarian Academy of Sciences in 1878, but was unable to complete the proposed changes due to his death.
