György Csipkes of Komáromi

* Komárom, April 23, 1628 – † Debrecen, October 6, 1678 / Reformed theologian, church writer, teacher ; ; He completed his high school studies in Komárom and Sárospatak, then became the rector of the Reformed school in Košice. From there he went to Debrecen and from 1650 he studied Eastern languages at the university in Utrecht. He even gave a speech in Hebrew to his fellow students. In 1653 he became a doctor of theology. He returned to Debrecen, where he became a teacher of Eastern languages and philosophy at the Reformed college. Between 1657 and 1678 he was also the city's Reformed pastor. He left his books to the colleges of Debrecen and Sárospatak. He wrote primarily religious works, treatises, and memorial speeches in Hungarian and Latin. It is characteristic of the extent of his work that in 1677 he printed a list of his works, which contained 61 works. His greatest literary achievement was his translation of the Bible, which was only published after his death (Leiden, 1718). In his works on astrology and comets, he advocated experience and scientific enlightenment as an antidote to superstition (Az judiciania astrológiáról és cometökös csillagórl való judicium, 1665). He edited the 1657 code of laws of the Debrecen college.
