John Klamarik

* Losonc, February 7, 1832 – † Bánya-Beszterce, October 8, 1898 / teacher, state secretary of education ; ; Although he was born in Losonc, he spent a significant part of his life away from his hometown. He completed his secondary schooling in Kiskunfélegyháza and Pest. He began his university studies in Pest and finished them in Vienna, where he took exams in quantity and natural science. In 1852–1854 he was a substitute teacher in Kiskunfélegyháza, and in Pécs (1855–1856) and then in Baja (1856–1860) he was a full-time teacher. In 1860–1861 he also spent a year in Székely-udvarhely, and after that he moved to Bánya-Beszterce, where he taught quantity, natural science and philosophy at the Royal Catholic High School. He was the director of the institution between 1867–1876. He did a lot to strengthen Hungarian-language education and the Hungarian spirit in the city, he started lower-level schools (state higher girls' school, bourgeois boys' school, folk school). In 1876–1883 he was the director of the Bánya Bisztergom school district. In 1883 he was transferred to Budapest to the Ministry of Religion and Public Education, where he primarily dealt with issues of secondary school education as a ministerial advisor. He submitted numerous reform proposals regarding the procedure of the matriculation exams and the teaching of the Greek language, but he also wrote several studies on the modernization of curricula.
