The forested, hilly, cave-strewn region extending directly north of Brno is Moravia's number one natural tourist attraction, the Moravian Karst (Moravsky Kras). The karst region, declared a landscape protection area, hides several hundred caves, five of which can be visited, the most interesting and popular of them by far being the Punkva cave system (Punkevní jeskynӗ), richly covered with stalactites, part of which can also be seen from the surface of the opening, the 138 m deep Macocha gorge offers visitors an unforgettable experience. ; Hungarian settlements also often went on excursions to this region.
