He obtained his medical degree at the University of Pest in 1865. After a short domestic hospital internship, he spent two years abroad. Between 1869 and 1872, he was an assistant professor at the obstetrics clinic of the University of Pest. Following the retirement of Professor János Diescher (1813–1883), he became the head of the obstetrics clinic in 1874. From 1876 he was an extraordinary professor, and from 1879 an ordinary professor. He introduced the accurate recording of observed data related to patients, patient headers, and medical records, and these could be studied later. He is also considered a pioneer of obstetric chemotherapy, as he used intravenous sublimate injections in women with puerperal fever. He is also credited with developing several tools and procedures that are still in use today. His great merit is the organization of Hungarian midwifery and the introduction of modern midwifery education. He founded a midwifery training institute. He was one of the preparers of the so-called Midwifery Act. He was an early follower of Semmelweis's asepsis theory. He was awarded the title of Court Councilor.
