Erzsébet Kováts, born in Jásza

The Jászai couple, József Jászai and his wife, Erzsébet Kováts, born Jászai Józsefné, were active in public life in the village until 1944. József Jászai was born in 1884 in Esztergom, and he attended school there. In World War I, he fought on the Russian front, where he was seriously wounded. Barton worked as a school principal. Then in 1908 he married Erzsébet Kováts, who was also a teacher and was born in Esztergom in 1880. They worked at the school until the nationalization of the school. During their time in Barton, they were also active members of several local organizations. The Jászai couple are credited with teaching several plays and numerous cultural activities. József Jászai was the school principal and president of the SzMkE (Széchényi Hungarian Cultural Association), and his wife Erzsébet Jászai led the folk dance group called Gyöngyösbokréta. Gyöngyösbokréta also performed at the National Theatre in Budapest. József died in 1946, and his wife Erzsébet in 1951. They were laid to rest near the high cross in the Barti cemetery.
