He studied law in Sárospatak and Budapest, and natural history at the University of Budapest. He worked as a teacher for a while and during this time he began to deal more and more with zoology. Kornél Chyzer (Bártfa) and Géza Horváth (Csécs) also played a role in this, who joined him as an assistant at the Entomological Station in 1890. He was its temporary director in 1895 and its director from 1896 until his death. Agricultural entomology was primarily his interest, and he dealt with almost all significant insect pests. He organized modern protection against agricultural (arable and horticultural) insect pests in Hungary.
