Aladár Igó, folk woodcarver

Other - other

Everyone knew Aladár Igó in Gömör, but perhaps beyond Gömör as well. Many people visited him and enjoyed his delicious Paloc regional dialect. In recognition of his artistic work that preserved the most beautiful Hungarian folk traditions, he was awarded the Officer's Cross of the Order of Merit of the Republic of Hungary by the President of the Republic of Hungary on August 20, 2004. Ferenc Mádl personally visited him at his home in Hanva. He also painted the landscape beautifully and brought art to wood and stone. ; The Hanva sculpture park preserves his name and work. ; His life story can be read in extraordinary detail in the book by György Tóth: Aki a Sajó partján vezete az akademíat - Igó Aladár munkassága. ; In 2018, an exhibition hall and memorial room were opened in his native village of Hanva for the famous people born in Hanva, where Igó Aladár was given a separate memorial room - with a permanent exhibition. ; In this way, in the small village of Gömör, the following people are commemorated in a worthy place: landowner and public figure Zoltán Hanvay, poet-Reformed pastor Mihály Tompa, Tompa's wife Emília Soldos, Reformed deacon János Szakall, Reformed bishop emeritus Géza Erdélyi, actor Géza László, graphic artist Ernő Majoros, blacksmith-applied artist Ottó László, folk woodcarver Igó Aladár, university professor Béla László, and poet-writer-translator Elemér Tóth. ; The memorial room was created thanks to the kindness of local entrepreneur István Juhász, who was awarded the title of Knight of Hungarian Culture for his care and promotion of Hungarian culture.
